Rare Shark Encounters!
At Shark Cage Diving KZN, we are lucky to see a variety of magnificent sharks on an almost daily basis. However, once in while we are truly privileged to experience rare shark encounters. Here are two of our favourites below:
Great White Shark
Great White Sharks are mostly seen in the Cape. This is because they have a constant food supply of Seals. The sharks pass through our waters on their migration, but are rarely seen. We were very lucky to see this one on the 2/7/2015 for over an hour on one of our dives at Durban’s Aliwal Shoal. The other sharks on the dive were not bothered by her, which was amazing to see. What a great experience in our waters! This was certainly one for our Rare Shark Encounters page!
Whale Shark
Whale Sharks are normally only seen in the Summer months, from December to about April. Plankton is abundant during these months. Sadly, we have not seen them in the last 4 years due to being killed for there fins. They come through the Mozambique channel on their migration and there were days where we could see at least 7 a day just past the last wave from the shoreline. Sadly this is now very uncommon, so to encounter this one in the in the winter on a Cage Dive at Durban’s Aliwal Shoal was a great surprise! Another one for our Rare Shark Encounters collection! When a Whale Shark is 6m in length it indicates they are about 30 years old and at 12m about a 100 years old.
